Abstract

581,399. Taper roller bearings. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd., and McNICOLL, D. Dec. 24, 1945, No. 34889. [Class 12 (i)] In a taper roller bearing the cage has at one end a ring or annular flange 7 which overhangs the thrust flange 2 of the cone and has the other end formed to releasably interlock with the cup 4. The cage carries resilient roller-spacing arms 8, extending from the ring in conical formation and passing between the rollers 3 substantially parallel to the race surface of the cup 4, these .arms having their free ends turned up to form tips 9 which engage with the cup 4 by a spring snap action when the cup is moved axially into position over the rollers. The width between the free ends of the arms 8 is such that the ends normally retain the rollers, but can be sprung apart by endwise force applied to the rollers to permit the removal of the rollers. The larger end of the cone 1 is externally bevelled around the outer wall of the rib 2 at 5, to correspond with the cage ring 7, and, at the opposite end of the bearing, the larger end of the cup 4 is internally bevelled at 6 to correspond with the lips 9 of the cage. The bevelled end surface 6 will depress the lips 9 sufficiently to clear this surface, so that the bearing members can be readily separated. The cage can be made from a flat sheet-steel blank. A double-row taper bearing assembly has an annular recess 12 between two cups 4. In a modification, the arms of the cage may have at opposite sides lateral wings with edges bevelled or shaped to engage and overlap the rollers. The arms are joined to the end ring of the cage by neck portions, thus forming pockets of substantially H-shaped.
