581,359. Gravity-separation apparatus. ALEXANDER, W. May 7, 1945, No. 11528. [Class 46] [Also in Group XXIX] Apparatus for separating liquids of different specific gravities in which the discharge of the separated liquids from a tank is automatically controlled by a float operating a pilot valve that adjusts the flow of steam or compressed air to or from a relay cylinder connected with a liquid-discharge valve, is characterized in that the pilot valve is on a hollow support the interior of which communicates with the interior of the tank. As shown in Fig. 1, a tank 1 with an inlet 10 for a mixture of oil and water is provided with an apertured cylinder 13 supporting a bearing 16 for a float 18. The float is surrounded by a cylindrical perforated baffle to facilitate separation of the oil and water. The float is connected by a lever 21 to a rod 61 adapted to operate a pilot valve [see Group XXIX] in a casing 45. The casing is fixed on the top of a hollow support 56. The pilot valve controls the supply of steam or compressed air through pipes 44 to either end of a relay cylinder 32 whereby the piston therein operates a valve to discharge oil from a pipe 9 or water from a pipe 5. The piston is connected by a rod 31, Fig. 6, to a duplex valve 35. In one position of the valve passageway 36a is opened to allow discharge of oil from the tank. With the valve in the opposite position passageway 37a is opened to allow discharge of the water. Other forms of duplex valve are described. Instead of a duplex valve two valves with one or two relay cylinders may be provided.
