Abstract
580,757. Welding. MARTIN, H. Nov. 10, 1942, No. 14975/44. Divided out of 580,732. [Class 83 (iv)] In welding metal or alloy studs, tubes or the like to plates or other bodies, particularly for welding studs of steel or alloys thereof-to plates of steel or alloys thereof, the end of the stud &c. is metallised with a metal of high electrical conductivity such as aluminium, an arc is struck between the stud &c. and the plate, the sttid &c. moved into contact with the plate and the current maintained until the weld is completed. Direct or alternating current may be used. The metallisation of the stud &c. causes an instantaneous uniform arc to be formed. The arc may be formed by with drawing the stud &c. from contact with the plate, by bridging a gap between the stud &c. and plate with a fusible mass such as a ball of fibrous metallic material, or by a short length of metal tube or a pin of small cross-section. Metallising is effected by metal spraying, preferably by the Schori or Schoop process. The stud may have a coned end and an adjacent part for a distance, e.g. of “" unthreaded and the coned part and, if desired, also the unthreaded part may be metallised. Specification 156,836, [Class 83 (iv)], is referred to.
