Abstract

In an electrode in which the coating contains finely divided alloying metal of different composition to the core and forms a crater during welding, in order that the weld deposit shall be substantially correct as the crater is forming when welding with an unused electrode, the end part of the core has a reduced cross-section, whereas the coating is of the same external diameter throughout the length of the electrode. The end part 12 of the core 2 may be in the form of a cone, a truncated cone, a series of truncated cones of increasing angle, a plain or threaded cylinder, a truncated wedge or a flat tongue. The end face 4<SP>1</SP> of the coating 3 may be slightly bevelled to facilitate initial striking of the arc. The electrode may deposit non-ferrous or ferrous metal such as alloy, stainless or hard surfacing steels. A mild steel core may have a coating containing 15À5% Ni, 37À5% FeCr and 4À25% FeMo to deposit a stainless steel containing 12À5% Ni, 17À5% Cr and 2À2% Mo.
