580,330. Grinding-wheels. KIDD, F., and KIDD, T. D. June 30, 1944, No. 12476. [Class 60] A chuck for holding a face grinding-wheel comprising a body wherein a face grinding-wheel is held by a split tapered ring lined with fibrous material and compressed to clamp the wheel by a screwed collar, has means whereby the grinding- wheel is locked against axial movement comprising interengaging portions on the wheel and ring. The chuck body a has an externally screwed boss b carrying an adjustable back-plate e, and has also a flange f with an internally tapered surface g and an external screw-thread receiving a flanged collar h and a locking ring k. A split tapered ring m, which may be in several portions, is located in the tapered flange f and is lined with fibrous material n, which engages the outer surface of a grinding-wheel p when the collar h is screwed up, and in order to prevent axial movement of the wheel p the ring m has a lip r to engage one of a number of grooves s in the wheel p. As the wheel wears, another groove s is utilized, the back-plate e being adjusted to engage the inner end face of the wheel ; the lip r may be replaced by projections which engage a spiral groove in the wheel p. In a modification, the boss b and the backplate e are omitted, and the grinding-wheel may be solid. A number of chucks carrying the grinding-wheels may be secured in a circle to a face-plate to form the equivalent of a segmental type grinding-wheel.
