Abstract
In a method of manufacture of articles by powder metallurgy including pressing and sintering followed by machining, the surface porosity after machining is restored by subjecting the machined surface to chemical or electro - chemical treatment. The electro - chemical treatment may be anodising, whilst the chemical treatment may be etching or pickling with an organic or inorganic acid, followed by neutralising and washing. The article may then be impregnated with an oil either by pressure or by heating and then immersing in a cool impregnating substance. Examples of articles are piston rings, valve and tappet guides, bearing bushes and cylinder inserts.
