Abstract

580,136. Packing glands. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., BINGHAM, A. E., and MORRIS, R. P. W. May 22, 1944, No. 9864. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] In resilient gland rings or packing washers having embedded fabric reinforcements and commonly used for effecting seals between relatively movable members, the reinforcement means are so disposed as not only to leave an annulus of the washer unreinforced and therefore more readily subject to resilient deformation but also to expose the reinforcement means at a rubbing face. The washer may be a moulded synthetic rubber ring 3, Fig. 2, having reinforcing fabric 4 left exposed at a rubbing face 5 which provides a seal against a relatively movable plunger 10. The unreinforced annulus and the washer may be provided with an annular recess 6 the lips of which are pressed apart by oil pressure in a cylinder acting through spaced ports 20 in, a pressure ring 14 held against a step 16 in cylinder wall 9 by a closure. plug 12 and a backing plate 15.The fabric acts as wicks to absorb oil so as to lubricate the rubbing face 5 at which the fabric is exposed. The invention is applicable equally to annular packing rings and to cup washers.
