Abstract

Carbon monoxide is removed from gases or vapours containing it by bringing them into contact with a silver oxide, the silver being partly at least in divalent or multivalent form, or a compound or mixture thereof with metal salts. Thus a compound of Ag3O4 with AgSO4 which may contain cadmium or a mixture of AgO with oxides of copper, cobalt or manganese may be used, and the material may be made porous with asbestos or glass wool as described in Specification 579,817, or it may be made into pellets or tubes. Examples are given of the preparation of a compound (Ag3O4)a. AgSO4 where a is 2.07 in which cadmium may also be present, and argentic oxide by decomposition of the above oxide-sulphate. The material may be used in gas mask canisters and for fire fighting apparatus.
