Abstract

579,764. Wave guides; directive wireless systems. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. May 26, 1943, No. 8449. Convention date, May 27, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] Relatively-turnable waveguides are interconnected by a section of concentric line of which the inner conductor is continuous and the outer conductor divided to permit relative rotation; and wave traps are provided to reduce escape of energy at the joint. The guide 3 is secured to an outer section 6 of concentric line which embraces an inner section 5 to which the other guide 2 is secured, the sections 5, 15 being relatively turnable on the bearing 19. The section 5 has an enlarged extension 32 which embraces a further section 7 of the concentric line and rests thereon at the bearing 30. The inner conductor 4 of the line extending continuously through the sections, has bulbous enlargements 10, 11 where it crosses the guides, and is supported at each end by adjustable tuning plugs 21, 26. To prevent escape of energy through the gap between the outer conductor sections 15 and 5, the former is fitted with an internal sleeve 40<1> which is reduced in its external diameter at its upper part, thus leaving a wide quarter-wave annular gap 16 communicating with a narrow quarter-wave annular gap 16<1>. A similar wave-trap is, arranged to prevent leakage between the line sections 7, 32. The tuning plug 26 is adjustable by a knob 38 and rods 39, and the plug 21 by a nut 22 screwed on the section 6 and engaging radial pins 24 on the plug. The ends of the guides 2, 3 are closed by adjustable tuning plugs 37, 20. Verticallypolarized waves fed along the guide 2 are picked up by the member 10 and cause an axial current therein which sets up a verticallypolarized wave in the guide 3 by radiation from the member 11. The guide 3 may be turned about the axis 4 so as to radiate the wave energy through the open end of that guide in any desired direction. The guide 3 may be twisted at 41 to change the direction of polarization, and may be provided with a reflector 36 for assisting directivity. The system will operate to transfer energy in the opposite direction for receiving.
