Abstract

579,583. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). July 19, 1944, No. 13808. [Class 112] Rotary take-ups. The invention relates to the means for preventing entanglement of a broken thread in a take-up similar to that described in Specification 496,367, which comprises discs 24, 30 rotating counterclockwise and bearing thread-engaging pins 26, 31 respectively, the disc 30 being provided with a recess to receive a finger 56 on which the loose end of a broken thread becomes wound. According to the invention, a guard 46 betwen the two take-up members 24, 30 has a bevelled face 50 which, when a loose loop of thread is carried round by. friction of the pins 31 as shown, lifts one limb of the loop on to the face of a ring 32 carried by the pins 31; in addition, the disc 30 carries a peg 44, inclined slightly outwardly from the axis of the disc. The loose thread becomes wound on the finger 56 and peg 44 and, unless cut by the finger 56 (which has a cutting edge on its lower side), may be thrown off on to the arm 58 whence it can be readily removed by breaking it against a cutting edge on the upper side of the arm. A pivoted hood (not shown), with viewing apertures, covers the peg 44 in all positions. As in the Specification referred to the thread guide 71 is carried by the presser-bar. The thread passes from the guide 68 to the tension device 69 over an annular member, with a large groove, fixed in the frame and surrounding the hub of the disc 30.
