Abstract

496,367. Sewing - machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. March 24, 1938, No. 9010. Convention date, Oct. 12, 1937. [Class 112] A take-up for sewing- machines comprises a plurality of cyclicallyoperable take-up elements travelling in circular paths at different frequencies about spaced axes. In the arrangement shown, the needledriving shaft 14 carries at its end a concentric disc 42 to which a similar disc 44 is fixed by two studs 46, and a shaft 19 parallel to the shaft 14 has a disc 36 fixed to its end by a pair of studs 35, 37 and a countersunk screw 34, and a ring 39 fixed to the disc 36 by a pair of studs 40 ; the discs 42, 44 and the disc and ring 36, 39 are spaced sufficiently to permit the thread to pass between them and are surrounded by a guard member 63, which is fixed to the machine head and provided with a thread slot 65 to facilitate threading. The shaft 19 and the loop-taker shaft 21 are driven from the shaft 14 at twice the speed of the latter by a belt 23. The thread passes through a post 47 and ironing guide 48 to an adjustable tension device 49, then over a check-spring 50, under a guide 51 and over the studs 40, 46 to guides 52 and the needle ; the studs 35, 37 also engage the thread as well as, or instead of, the studs 40 during parts of the cycle. In order to prevent entanglement of the thread in the take-up parts if it should break, the disc 36 is formed with a shallow groove 66 into which the bent end of a fixed finger 67 projects to catch and break any thread becoming wound on the take-up. The thread tension is reduced when the presser-foot is lifted, by means of a cam member 55 carried on the presser-bar to engage the spindle 56 of the tension device 49 and also by reason of the fact that the thread-guide 51 is carried on the presser-bar. The presser-bar is forced against the work by a leaf-spring 57 resting on a screw 58 and stressed by a screw 59, and is lifted by the usual lever 60. The form and number of the threadengaging members 40, 46, their distances from their axes of rotation, and their frequencies of operation, and also the relative positions of the axes of rotation and the thread-guides, may be varied to suit the operation to the requirements of the loop-taker.
