Abstract
1,189,069. Sewing machines. SINGER CO. 30 July, 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 36228/68. Heading D1G. A thread-carrying bobbin having a hub and at least one circular flange is rotatable in a bobbin case, a brake device, pivoted to the bobbin case about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the bobbin, has a portion adapted to engage the thread passing out of the bobbin case, and tensioning means carried on the bobbin case biases the brake device into engagement with the bobbin flange to place the bobbin thread under tension, the tensioning means having a guide means cooperating with slot means formed in an annular flange on the bobbin case and with the brake device to permit the thread emerging from the bobbin to pass about the threadengaging portion of the brake device, whereby drawing of the bobbin thread causes the brake device to pivot out of engagement with the bobbin flange. In Fig. 5 a bobbin having circular end flanges 116, 118 interconnected by a hub 114 is journalled in a case having an annular wall 110 extending from an end wall (104). A lever 126, pivoted at 132 in a slot 122 formed in wall 110, is formed at one end with a brake finger 128 and at the other end with an apertured finger 130. A leaf spring 134, secured intermediately to wall 110 by a screw 136, has one end 138 engaging finger 128 to bias the latter against flanges 118 for normally preventing rotation of the bobbin. Thread 120 from the bobbin passes through an aperture 142 in wall 110, through the aperture in finger 130, between the other end 140 of spring 134 and wall 110 to be tensioned thereby, and finally through an eyelet 144 in wall 110. Drawing thread 120 from beyond eyelet 144 thereby serves to shift finger 130 towards wall 110 and finger 128 away from flange 118 to permit rotation of the bobbin. In Fig. 9 a bobbin having a hub 214 interconnecting circular flanges 216, 218 is journalled in a case having an annular wall 210 extending from an end wall 204. The ring surface of wall 210 is formed with a groove 244 interconnecting apertures 246, 248 in wall 210. A lever 226, pivoted at one end at 232 in aperture 248, is formed at its other end with a transverse brake and thread-engaging finger 230. A leaf spring 234 is secured at one end to wall 210 by a screw 236a, is engaged intermediately by an adjusting screw 236b, and has a free end 238 engaging lever 226 to bias finger 230 against flanges 216, 218. Thread from the bobbin passes through an aperture 250 in wall 210, between wall 210 and a tensioning portion 240 of spring 234, under pin 230 and through aperture 246. Drawing of thread 220 thereby disengages pin 230 from the flanges 216, 218 to permit rotation of the bobbin. The arrangement may be used in the sewing machine described in Specification 1,179,964, in which, at the end of a stitching operation, the needle and bobbin threads are drawn by a hooked member and are then severed by a single knife blade.
