579,393. Windscreen wiper valvegear. MELMORE, W. M., and MELMORE, A.L. Feb. 16, 1944, Nos. 2858/44 and 3912/45. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A windscreen wiper for aircraft comprises a double-ended piston 3, 3a, actuated by liquid or air, having an intermediate rack engaging a spindle which carries the wiper blade at one end, and at the other end loosely supports a rotary-oscillating valve 8 actuated by a cam 11 of double V-shape loose on the spindle, through dogs 9 on the underside of the cam engaging slots in the valve ; the cam is actuated by dogs fixed on the spindle, and coacts with spring-pressed balls &c. 12 to give a quick throw. With hydraulic actuation, the valvebox may be connected with the liquid exhaust for silencing. In one form, the valve is cylindrical and has a pressure control port 19, Fig. 6, extending nearly over the periphery and connected to two balancing ducts 20 on either side of exhaust duct 19*. A clearance between, the cylinders and pistons allows passage of pressure fluid. In another form, the valve is stepped, the smaller portion being operated by the dogs, and the larger portion having an inlet and an exhaust duct, the valve chamber being sealed by a cup-leather to maintain the valve on its seat.
