Abstract

<PICT:0579069/IV/1> In the manufacture of artificial filaments having varying denier along their length, the spinning material is fed at a varying rate to the spinneret by combining the output of a constant volume pump operating at constant speed with that of a rotary pump which is operated intermittently. Referring to Fig. 1, spinning material in line 2 is fed to the spinnerets 6 by positive displacement pumps 4 driven at constant speed from shaft 7. Addition material is intermittently supplied to each spinneret by the auxiliary pumps 10 of the positive displacement rotary type which are driven from <PICT:0579069/IV/2> <PICT:0579069/IV/3> shaft 13. Means for driving intermittently the auxiliary pump shaft 13 are housed at 16 and comprise three driven members, namely a gear 17 (Fig. 4) and sleeves 17a and 17b, each rotatably mounted with respect to the shaft 13 and each having a one-way clutch connection 18 with the shaft 13 so that when one member is driving the shaft, it can run ahead of the other two. The gear 17 is driven by a rotary hydraulic motor 29 and the sleeves 17a, 17b by hydraulically operated reciprocatory pistons 23, 24. Cams 37, 38 (Fig. 3), adapted to be driven either selectively or together from a common motor, serve to control the movement of pistons 23, 24 and rotation of the motor 29. Cam follower 63 on cam 37, by rising and then falling, alternately directs hydraulic fluid entering valve 60 from line 69 through one or other of the lines 27 or 28, thereby moving the pistons 23, 24 and driving shaft 13 through sleeves 17a, 17b. Cam follower 68 on cam 38 serves to control the valve 60a, such that when it moves outwardly hydraulic fluid from line 69 is directed into line 33a, through valve 35 and finally through hydraulic motor 29, thereby driving the gear 17 and shaft 13. At the same time fluid pressure in breach 33b causes piston 72 to release cam-follower 63 from co-operation with the cam 37 so that rotation of shaft 13 through pistons 23, 24 is prevented. When cam-follower 68 is in a recess on cam 38, flow of hydraulic fluid through line 34 is prevented by check valve 70, the motor 29 thus being inoperative.
