In a fuel injection pump of the rotary distributer type, the injected amount is metered by shuttles 34, 35 slidable in respective cylinders 32, 33 and alternately supplying fuel to the pump cylinder. In the angular position of the distributer member 11 shown, the shuttle 35 is moved outwards by fuel from a feed pump passing, under control of a throttle, from a feed groove 27 and through a port 31, fuel meantime being expelled from the outer end of the cylinder 33 through a drain port to a drain groove in the distributer member, while the shuttle 34 is driven inwards and expels fuel from its cylinder 32 via a port 30 to a radial passage 22 communicating via a passage 22 with the pump cylinder. Further rotation of the distributer member 11 closes the ports 30, 31 while the pump pistons are moved inwards to expel the fuel through one outlet. For adjusting the stroke of the shuttles, a spring-loaded piston 38 is movable by fluid pressure from the output of the feed pump, the pressure from which varies in accordance with the driven speed, which movement causes cam surfaces on members 40 to vary the positions of stop members 36, 37.
