Abstract
1416119 Fuel injection pumps STANADYNE Inc 13 Feb 1974 [28 Feb 1973] 6596/74 Heading F1A A fuel injection pump comprises a pair of shuttles 216, Fig. 4, each reciprocable between a pair of adjustable stops 218, 238, the chambers 214 on one side of the shuttles being arranged alternately to receive fuel from a groove 34, Figs. 1 and 2, fed with fuel through a governor controlled metering valve 134 and the chambers 224 on the other side of the shuttles being arranged for alternate pressurization to displace fuel from the chambers 214 into a pumping chamber 38. Fuel enters each chamber 214 each time a longitudinal groove 210, Fig. 2, connected to the groove 34 in a rotor 18 registers with a port 212 connected to the respective chamber 214. At the same time the other chamber 224 is connected to low pressure by a logitudinal groove 222 in the rotor, thereby to allow movement of the shuttle. After filling of a chamber 214, further rotation of the rotor 18 closes the groove 222 and connects the chamber 224, via a groove 232, to high pressure. Thus a measured quantity of fuel is displaced from the chamber 214 past a non-return ball valve 36 to the pumping chamber 38, Fig. 1 for subsequent delivery by radially reciprocating pistons 50 past a delivery valve 41 into a passage 44 and thence to whichever outlet passage 46 is aligned with the passage 44. The non-return valve 36 is urged towards its closed position by a closer piston 244 continuously subjected to the delivery from an inlet pump 22 via a passage 242. As described in Specification 1416120 the metering valve 134 is inter alia responsible for producing control pressure in a conduit 180 which is proportional to the square of the pump's speed. This control pressure acts on servo-pistons 204, 186 to determine the positions of a profiled plunger 178 controlling the stops 238 and the angular position of a cam ring 60 for causing reciprocation of the pistons 50. The positions of the plunger 178 and the ring 60 control the quantity delivered and the timing, respectively.
