Abstract
578,956. Sintered metal bodies. LODGE PLUGS, Ltd., and SMITHELLS, C. J. Feb. 7,1942, Nos. 1654 and 7997. [Class 82 (i)] Compact bodies are formed by compressing and sintering finely-diyided platinum, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium or palladium or alloys of these metals in admixture with 0.1 to 1 per cent of thorium oxide. The compact bodies may be swaged, rolled, drawn or otherwise treated to form sparking-plug electrodes, thermo-couples, electric furnace heating elements and catalyst gauzes. The finely-divided metal may be obtained by precipitation or decomposition and reduction in hydrogen and the thorium oxide or a compound which produces it may be added before or after the precipitation or reduction. In examples:- (1) finely-divided platinum is mixed with aqueous solutions of rhodium ammonium chloride and thorium nitrate, and the mixture dried, heated to 850 C. to obtain a mixture of platinum, rhodium and thorium oxide, which is compressed at about 50 tons per sq. in. and heated in hydrogen at 1400- 1550 C. (2) a solution of platinum in aqua regia is inixed with solutions of ammonium tungstate and thorium nitrate, the mixture is neutralized with ammonia, dried, heated to 800 C. in air and to 1000 C. in hydrogen. The product consisting of platinum, tungsten and thorium oxide is pressed and sintered in hydrogen at 1450 C.
