Abstract

A wire baking lacquer or enamel comprises a solution, in a suitable solvent, of a heat-hardenable cresol-modified melamine-aldehyde condensation product together with a polyvinyl acetal resin. The cresol-modified resin is prepared by reacting a melamine-aldehyde resin with cresol, either at room, or preferably, at elevated temperature with the aid of a catalyst; thus, a melamine-aldehyde resin, in solution in butanol or a mixture of xylol and butanol, is heated with cresol containing 50 per cent of metacresol, under reflux at 110 DEG C. using triethanolamine or other alkaline catalyst, until no free cresol is left, the solvent being then removed by distillation. The prepared resin is dissolved with twice its weight of a polyvinyl acetal resin in a mixture of heavy coal tar naphtha and ethyl lactate. In a modification, the melamine-aldehyde resin and the polyvinyl acetal resin are dissolved in cresol and reaction allowed or caused to take place to convert the melamine-aldehyde resin to the cresol-modified resin.
