Abstract

An epoxide resin which is a polyether derivation of a polyhydric phenol with terminal epoxide groups and intermediate alcoholic hydroxyl groups and which may be prepared from a polyhydric phenol by reaction in alkaline solution with epichlorhydrin, is heated with a drying oil at 450-580 DEG F. until a homogeneous blend is formed. The products are soluble in hydrocarbons such as xylol, or naphtha or mixtures thereof to yield coating and similar compositions. If desired, small amounts of alkaline catalysts may be added to the reaction mixture. The proportion of epoxide resin in the mixture may vary from 5-90 per cent. In examples an epoxide resin prepared by reacting epichlorhydrin with biphenol in presence of sodium hydroxide was reacted with dehydrated castor oil and the product dissolved in a hydrocarbon mixture or in xylol to yield a coating composition. Diethylene triamine may be added as a curing catalyst. The dehydrated castor oil may be added in stages with some heating in between. In the example, the dehydrated castor oil is replaced by soya bean oil. Other examples describe the use of an epoxide resin made by heating the one referred to above with bisphenol. The reaction may be performed in a closed kettle with an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, in an open kettle or under reflux. Linseed oil is also referred to as a suitable unsaturated triglyceride.
