Abstract

A condensation product is obtained by reacting together (a) an ether derived from an aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensate and an alcohol with 1-4 carbon atoms, (b) a softening agent and (c) a cyclic polycarboxylic acid or anhydride. The substance (a) is preferably hexamethoxymethylmelamine. The substance (b) is one or more of a polyhydric alcohol, a hydroxy fat acid, a hydroxy fatty oil, an ester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid with a monohydric alcohol, or a rosin and fat acid modified alkyd resin containing at least one hydroxyl group. The aminoplast intermediate (a) may be first reacted with either of substances (b) or (c) and, then, in a second step, with the other substance. Reaction is by heating to at least 60 DEG C. if desired in presence of small amounts of acid catalysts and of inert solvents, e.g. toluene, xylene, naphtha or white spirit. Solvent or water from the reaction may be removed. The products may be used for solvent-free lacquers or enamels.
