Abstract

578,515. Shaft couplings. FAIRMILE MARINE CO., Ltd., and BRADSHAW, G. Aug. 7, 1942, No. 11066. [Class 80 (ii)] A shaft coupling includes an annular clawlike member 3 engaging circumferential recesses 1a, 2a, in the shaft ends 1, 2, a coupling sleeve 4 having its internal surface tapered outwardly in both directions from its mid point, and tubular wedges 5 forced between the shaft ends and the sleeve 4. The claw member 3 is split or divided, and the wedges 5 may be keyed at 6a, 6b to the shafts and sleeve 4. Axial slots may be formed in the coned part of the wedges 5 to render them more flexible. Rings 7 screwed into the sleeve 4 are utilized to adjust or remove the wedges 5. When used to join the exposed sections of ship propeller shafting streamlined rings 9 may be secured to the shafts adjacent the couplings, or the coupling sleeve 4 may be streamlined.
