578,457. Broad band antennae. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 1, 1944, No. 8203. Convention date, May 15, 1943. [Class 40 (v)] Abroad band dipole antenna for aircraft comprises a conical element 60 adapted to be mounted on the airframe 2 and a flat or slightly curved disc-shaped element 62 arranged adjacent the apex of the conical element. The antenna is fed by a concentric-conductor transmission line, the outer conductor 14 of which is connected to the apex of the cone 60 whilst the inner .conductor 12 is connected to the disc 62 which it may rigidly support. The complete antenna may be covered by a spherical shield 64 of non-conducting material to reduce wind resistance, and the disc-shaped element may be mounted inside or outside the spherical shield, or in an aperture therein, the whole having the appearance of a spherical " blister " on the airframe. The disc-shaped element may take the form of a layer of metal deposited on the non-conducting shield by sputtering. If the part 2 of the airframe is of metal, it acts as an extension of the conical element 60 to lower the band-width, and, if not of conducting material, the same effect may be produced by placing a conducting surface over this part of the airframe.
