Abstract

In the process of bonding rubber to a prepared metal surface by vulcanization, the wetting of the metal surface by the rubber is facilitated by means of a relatively high-boiling ester of a long-chain fatty acid which is itself capable of wetting the surface, is compatible with unvulcanized rubber, and is substantially non-miscible with and insoluble in water. The ester is preferably the stearate of cyclohexanol or methyl cyclohexanol, and it may be used as a 5-15 per cent solution in a rubber solvent such as naphtha, benzol, toluol, xylol, or petrol. The metal surface to be bonded is preferably brass-plated, and the ester forms a film which displaces water and protects the surface from atmospheric action. If the ester is liquid at normal temperature, the surface of the metal should be dried in an oven to remove surface moisture and the solvent, and if it is normally solid, it should have a melting-point below the vulcanizing temperature. The ester or ester solution should also be applied to the surface of the rubber when it is fed to or placed in contact with the metal to act as a wetting-agent. If desired, the surface can also be painted with a rubber solution containing zinc naphthenate. After plating and washing, the metal surface is lowered into a vat containing running water, on the surface of which a layer of the ester or a solution thereof is floating, the level of the water being maintained between predetermined limits by means of a siphon.
