Abstract

Layers of rubber are attached to hard surfaces, such as metal, glass, ebonite, by the interposition of a layer of a product obtained by acting on guttapercha or balata with sulphuric or sulphonic acids, with or without phenols, in the absence of solvents. According to an example, 100 parts of underesinated balata are masticated, 7 1/2 parts of phenol sulphonic acid and 1 part of sulphuric acid are introduced, the mixture is heated to 140 DEG C. for 16 hours in vacuo, and then for 16 hours in air. The mass is masticated and dissolved in benzene, and painted on to a surface which is then coated with rubber e.g. by dipping, electrophoresis, pressing of a calendered sheet. An aqueous dispersion of the treated gutta &c. may be made and applied to the surface by dipping or electrophoresis. The gutta to be treated may be mixed with resins, factice, reclaim, cellulose derivatives, proteins, &c.
