Abstract
Textile fabric is bonded to rubber by depositing on the fabric a bonding metal which is attacked by sulphur under the conditions which exist when the rubber is vulcanized in contact with it, applying the metallised fabric to an unvulcanized rubber base, and vulcanizing the combined rubber and metallised fabric elements. The metal may be an alloy containing at least one constituent which is attacked by the sulphur, such as an alloy of copper and zinc, in which case the copper is attacked and the zinc is a diluent. A brass containing 70 per cent of copper and 30 per cent of zinc is suitable. The bonding metal must firmly adhere to the fabric and may be applied by electro-deposition or by metal spraying (for example to asbestos fabric).
