Abstract

Gilding and silvering.-Metallic surfaces are produced on non-metallic bodies capable of being moulded, by impregnating them, when in a finely divided or plastic condition, with sulphur, or a sulphur compound, which will combine with a metallic salt, applying a metallic salt thereto, and then reducing it to the metallic state. The materials treated may be that known under the registered Trade Mark " Bakelite," or casein and bituminous products, or mixtures containing rubber, which after impregnation, may be moulded to any desired shape. The metallic salt may be an oxide of silver or gold or a mixture thereof, and is prepared for use by forming it into a liquid or paste with a volatile medium, such as chloroform, turpentine, or benzol. The salt may be supplied by spraying, painting, or dipping, and the article is then heated to cause the salt to combine with the sulphur. The resulting sulphide is then reduced to the metallic state by means such as an electrolytic bath of ammonium nitrate or copper cyanide. Other metals, such as zinc, nickel, and tin, may be employed, and additional metal may be electrodeposited on the metallic surface.
