Abstract

299,903. Warren, A. I. Gates-, Warren, E. L. Gates-, and Precious Metal Industries, Ltd. Aug. 2, 1927. Gilding and silvering. - Electrically non-conducting substances, such as casein products, ce11u1ose acetate, vegetable and synthetic gums, tortoiseshe11, urea and phenol condensation products, and like substances which have or which may be given a porous surface, are coated with metal by first abrading, if necessary, to produce a porous surface, and then applying to the surface a metallic salt and a quantity of the same or a different metal in the form of a pure finely-divided precipitate made up as a suspension or paste. The metal may be formed into a paste with the solution of the salt or may be applied separately. The surface to which the salt has been applied is allowed to stand for a period exposed to light and to the action of a reducing-agent, such as formaldehyde, furfurol, or the like, which may be naturally present in the substance or may be in the form of vapour in the atmosphere of the room. Where the substance to be coated is so1ub1e, the solvent for the metal salt may be also a solvent of the substance. When a volatile solvent is employed, an inert colloid may be added to assist in keeping the metal powder in suspension. After application, the coatings may be burnished, and, if a heavier coating is required, the substance may subsequently be electroplated.
