Abstract

592,860. Luminescent materials and applications. CINEMA-TELEVISION, Ltd., and HEAD, R. B. Feb. 1, 1945, No. 2593. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A layer of particles of luminescent material is deposited on a support from a suspension of the particles by charging the support electrically, the support being positioned with the whole if its receptive surface facing downwards so that only the finer particles are deposited. The support may be of metal or metal coated, for example with a thin film of platinum, aluminium or silver, and a voltage gradient is applied between the support and an electrode. The particles may be settled from a still or flowing gas, such as air, in which case luminescent materials suitable are, for example, zinc silicate, cadmium silicate and zinc sulphide. The particles may be bound by settling on the support a layer of phosphoric acid from a gaseous suspension or by the method described in Specification 586,524, either before or after deposition is effected. Alternatively the particles may be deposited from a liquid, for example an organic liquid such as acetone. The support may be treated with a binder as above, or alternatively it may be dipped in a liquid binder such as a solution of 1 per cent phosphoric acid in acetone. The support may then be baked.
