Abstract

Coatings are applied to a substrate by immersing the substrate in a liquid suspension containing matrix material in particle form and a multiplicity of fibres of material different from that of the matrix, aligning the fibres in the liquid suspension and while moving the substrate through the liquid suspension depositing the fibres commingled with the matrix material as a film half to 30 microns thick with the fibres oriented parallel to each other and to the plane of the layer. The fibres may be suspended in a non-volatile liquid such as amyl acetate and an alternating electrical voltage applied to the liquid to align the fibres. The substrate may then be drawn upwardly through the fibres to the surface. The matrix material may be particles or powders of material such as aluminium, nickel, titanium, coloumbium, tantalum or alloys of these. The fibres are preferably single crystal fibres of silicon carbide, aluminium oxide or silicon nitride, or of glass. The substrate may be a thin plastics sheet, a metal foil or a wire. Binders such as nitrocellulose or polybutadiene may be incorporated in a suspension to assist adhesion of the fibres. The applied layer may be moved from the substrate to form a self-supporting film.
