Abstract
577,621. Electrodeposition of iron. CHAMPION PAPER & FIBRE CO. April 12, 1944, No. 6766. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1943. [Class 41] Iron of fine-grained and ductile form is plated out from a bath of ferrous sulphate or chloride containing also manganese in soluble form such as the sulphate or chloride or other salt or a salt of manganic or permanganic acid. Pitting can be prevented by the addition of a sodium salt of a sulphated higher fatty alcohol. In an example a plating bath contains per litre 300 grams of ferrous chloride and 1.4 grams soluble manganese in the form of chloride. The bath is maintained at a temperature of 160‹F. to 220‹F. and at a pH value between 1.2 and 2.6. The quantity of manganese per litre may vary from 0.1 gr. to 20 grams and the required acidity may be obtained by the addition of hydrochloric acid. With manganese in the form of sulphate the pH value may vary from 2 to 4.5 and the current density may vary from 50 amps. per sq. ft. for a bath at 160‹F. to 300 amps. per sq. ft. for a bath at 200‹F. or higher. The anodes may be enclosed in porous cups, glass or asbestos bags and the electrolyte if contaminated with organic materials may be treated with activated carbon. To avoid oxidation by the air the electrolyte may be covered with mineral oil, melted paraffin &c.
