Abstract
577,496. Screw jacks. MASON, F. R. March 6, 1944, No. 4106. [Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXV] A power-driven jack for operating aircraft equipment such as landing flaps and retractable undercarriages has a pair of electric motors differentially connected thereto, braking means being associated with each motor for automatically arresting the movement of a motor on failure. In the embodiment shown, two motors 1, 2, drive a screw threaded member 21 through spur pinions 6, 7, a differential gear 10, 11, on a cross shaft 15, and pinions 18, 19. In the event of failure of one of the motors, a solenoid-operated brake is applied thereto to prevent its rotation, and the other motor drives the member 21 through the appropriate pinion and crown wheel, causing the planet pinions 12, 13, to roll around the fixed crown wheel, the member 21 moving at half the normal axial speed but maintaining the normal thrust. According to the Provisional Specification the differential mechanism may take the form of a linkage or a pulley-and-cable arrangement.
