Abstract
562,017. Aircraft retractable undercarriages. MESSIER AIRCRAFT EQUIPMENT, Ltd. (formerly Rubery Owen Messier, Ltd.), and CONWAY, H. G. Dec. 9, 1942, No. 17499. [Class 4] An aircraft undercariage is retracted by an electric or other rotary motor through a pair of gears having a varying velocity ratio so as to give an increased mechanical advantage to the motor where maximum effort is required. In one form, a worm 17 on a motor-driven shaft 18 engages a toothed gear 16 of spiral contour so that the maximum mechanical advantage occurs as the undercarriage 11 is raised laterally to its completely retracted position: The bearing 19 for the shaft 18 is laterally displaceable to accommodate the varying radius of the gear 16 either under spring pressure or under control of a cam moving with the leg 11. Fig. 2 shows another form in which two meshing eccentric gears 30, 31 are. mounted respectively on parallel, shafts 29, 25, the latter carrying the undercarriage leg 21. The shaft 29 is driven by worm gear 27, 28. In another form, two non-circular gears are arranged to give maximum mechanical advantage when the leg is partially raised, as is required when the leg is raised . against wind pressure in a fore-and-aft plane..
