577,355. Photographic processing apparatus. TERRANEAU, R. Sept. 13, 1943, No. 15011. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXV] Apparatus for processing films such as motion picture films includes a treatment compartment or container a associated with which are five parallel shafts carrying rollers for conveying the film of which two d and e, are independently driven by electric motors and disposed above the liquid level or the highest level at which other treatment, e.g. drying, is effected, one, m, is free-running and spring or gravity-urged to apply tension to the film and to operate controlling means for the electric motor of roller e and two, u and v, are free-running rollers disposed below the treatment level. The controlling means, which may comprise a potentiometer, variable resistance or reactance, varies the speed of drive of roller e in proportion to the movement of the spring or gravity urged roller m. Any desired number of further sets of three parallel shafts or spindles may be added, associated with the same compartment or container, as n, f, w, or with further compartments or containers, as o, p, q, q, h, i, x, y,'z with container b. In each further set of three rollers, one free-running roller is disposed below the treatment level, and the remaining two are above this level, one being free-running and spring or gravity-urged and the other driven by an electric motor controlled by the movement of the spring or gravity urged roller. With the film 8 passing around successive rollers as shown, variations in the length of the film due to different successive treatments are compensated for, and a break in the film stops the feed of further film by switching off all the motors feeding in the film due to the drop in tension. Indicators may be'provided to show where the break has occurred. The motors driving rollers d, e,f, &c., may be direct current motors operable at variable speed and constant torque. The lower free-running rollers in a compartment, e.g. rollers 2, 3, 4 in compartment c may be mounted on a frame which may be raised or lowered to vary the length of time of exposure of the film to a particular treatment.
