[Class 38 (i)] An electric cartridge fuse (Fig. 1) has end caps 7 of thermosetting, insulating material moulded on to the barrel portion 1 of porcelain, steatite, or heat-resisting glass, indented at 8 to obtain a keying effect, external contacts 6 also indented at 9 being moulded through the end caps and connected to metal end pieces 2 to which the ends of the fusible element or elements 4 are soldered, the end pieces being placed within the barrel portion. An arc quenching material 10 may be introduced through a hole 11 in one of the end pieces. In a modification (Fig. 2), circumferential recesses 12 are provided on the barrel portion for the end caps and the fusible elements 4 are enclosed in separate chambers in the barrel portion which is also provided with recesses 14 for the metal end pieces 2. The external contacts 6 have apertures 15 into which the moulding material flows to form keys. Alternatively, the barrel portion may be a metal cylinder with a liner of mica or asbestos, with end pieces also of mica bearing against the ends of the said liner, smaller metal discs being placed outside the end pieces for connection to the external contacts and fusible elements.
