576,921. Refrigerating. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., NOLCKEN. W. G., and BRANDON, A. O'B. April 22, 1944, No. 7492. [Class 29] [Also in Group III] In refrigerating apparatus of the vapourcompression type using refrigerants in which the lubricating oil is soluble, an auxiliary condenser 13 is arranged between the compressor 11 and the oil separator 14, in which refrigerant vapour is caused to condense upon the oil droplets being carried by the refrigerant vapour, the oil and condensed refrigerant being thereafter separated from the vapour and heated in the oil separator without ebullition to re-evaporate the condensed refrigerant from the oil. Compressed refrigerant from the compressor 11 passes through a coil 12 to the auxiliary condenser 13 where the refrigerant vapour condenses upon the oil being carried as mist, and the drops so formed are separated from the vapour by gauze 19 in the oil separator 14. The oil-refrigerant mixture collects upon a tray 23 whence it trickles down a wick 20 surrounded by the coil 12 heated by the passage of the refrigerant vapour from the compressor so that refrigerant vapour is evaporated from the mixture without ebullition. The oil is collected in a space 21 from which it is returned to the compressor crankcase by a float-operated needle valve 22. The oil-free vapour from the top of the oil separator 14 passes to the condenser 15, liquid receiver 16, expansion valve 17 and evaporator 18 back to the compressor. The coil 12 may be replaced by an electric plate heater and the auxiliary condenser 13 may be water-cooled.
