Abstract

A non-sticking, non-welding electrical contact is composed of a metal of high conductivity selected from the group consisting of copper, silver, gold and alloys in which these metals predominate, and, interspersed with such metal, kaolin or an oxide of one of the metals selected from the group consisting of beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium and having a m. pt. exceeding 1800 DEG C., the oxide being preferably in the proportion of 1-10 per cent of the mixture. Particles of the metal may be mixed with the oxide, pieces of the desired porosity pressed from the mixture and the pieces sintered by heat; a mixture of the finely-divided metal and oxide may be pressed to porous bars and the bars impregnated by heating them together with more of the metal at a temperature above the m. pt. of the metal but lower than that of the oxide; the oxide may be stirred uniformly into molten metal and the mixture cast in chill moulds; a mixture of the oxide and powdered metal may be hot pressed at a temperature sufficiently high to effect bonding. 1-2 per cent of a cementing agent, e.g. sodium silicate, may be added. Specifications 214,580, 270,300, [both in Class 70], and 523,318 are referred to.
