Abstract

A method of forming a metal-metal oxide composition or alloy suitable for use as an electrical contact material, a bearing or bearing material, a brake lining or a clutch facing which comprises internally oxidizing the oxidizable metal or metals of a metal-metal oxide composition or alloy of which at least one metal has a high diffusion rate for oxygen without forming a stable oxide or oxides and the other metal or metals has or have a high affinity for oxygen and a tendency to form stable oxides, the first-mentioned metal or metals remaining unoxidized and unaffected. The oxidizable metal or metals may have low-melting points, the unoxodizable metal having a relatively high melting-point, the body being heated to melt the low melting point metal or metals and an agent capable of oxidizing the low melting point metals is dispersed in the body under ambient pressure sufficient to prevent boiling off of the said low melting point metal or metals. The composition or alloy may be subjected to heat and to an oxidizing agent so as to diffuse the said oxidizing agent through the composition. The relative distribution of the metals is preferably not affected by the treatment. The composition may comprise a silver base alloy, e.g., silver-cadmium or silver-lead or an alloy of gold, palladium or platinum group metal and cadmium, lead, thallium or copper or a silver-thorium or silver-beryllium alloy. In the manufacture of a composition having high secondary emission the invention is applied to a silver base composition containing material consisting of one or more of magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, thorium, uranium, titanium and zirconium.
