Abstract

576,558. Eddy-current brakes. HEENAN & FROUDE, Ltd., and HAYES, C. T. Feb. 10, 1942, No. 1725. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] The exciting coil of an eddy-current clutch, brake, or dynamometer, is supplied from a constant speed generator which is excited by' an exciter mounted on, or driven by, the movable element of the eddy-current apparatus, the excitation of which thus varies with the speed of the movable member according to a desired law. The exciting coil 11 is supplied by generator 3, run at constant speed by three-phase motor 2. The field coil 7 of generator 3 is supplied, through control resistances 9, 10, by an exciter 12 running on the same shaft as a moving element of the eddy-current apparatus. The exciter 12 has a shunt winding 13 and a winding 14 separately excited by a small generator 4 running with generator 3. Generator 4 also supplies reverse winding 5 which removes effects of residual magnetism in generator 3. To run up to speed, the switch 16 enables generator 3 to be shunt excited at the same time the winding 5 is reversed by switch 17, to prevent the generator reversing its polarity. To stop, winding 7 may be disconnected, or motor 2 may be switched off.
