[Class 92 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] Two electromagnetic clutches 22, 25 of the eddy current type are arranged to couple a driven shaft 14 to a driving shaft 13 so that by selective excitation of the clutches the shaft 14 may rotate in opposite directions. The invention is described as applied to the mechanism for rotating an aircraft gun turret and elevating the gun. Rheostats 33, 37 in series with the respective exciting windings 122, 125 of the clutches are jointly operable to increase the excitation of one and reduce that of the other at the same time, so that the balanced drive of the clutches is disturbed to produce a drive at a desired speed in a required direction ; after a movement of the controller to an adjustable degree the circuit of one clutch may be opened. The speed of the drive may be automatically limited as by a generator 29 geared to the driven shaft and having a constant polarity, which is opposed to that of the source of exciting current ; other kinds of speed' governor may be used, for example a centrifugal device increasing a resistance in the exciting circuit as speed increases. A resistance 34 common to both excitation circuits may adjust both excitations in common.
