Abstract

576,145. Wave guides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. April 28, 1944, No. 8053. Convention date, May 7, 1943. [Class 40 (v)] An attenuator for electromagnetic waves comprises a metallic wave guide section 1 and a resistive septum or plate 2 longitudinally positioned therein and spaced therefrom a distance such as to afford the desired attenuation to waves flowing in the section. The plate 2, of phenol fibre coated on the face next to the guide with a resistive material such as finely divided graphite, is fixed by an insulating screw 8 to an insulating rod 7 which passes through the guide and is axially movable by means of rack 12 and pinion 13 rotated by a knob 19 having a calibration scale 18 and fixed index 21. The ends of plate 2 are notched at 24, 25, Fig. 3, to reduce end reflection, and a shaped central aperture 26 is provided to reduce the variation of attenuation with frequency.
