[Class 69 (ii)] For controlling the landing carriages 14, Fig. 1, of aircraft hydraulically by moving them from an operative position shown in full lines to an inoperative position shown in dotted lines, the jack 16 is connected to the pressure fluid supplied by a pump 1 by means of a valve 8 which is opened by the piston 5 of an accumulator 4 only when sufficient liquid is stored in the accumulator to effect the reverse operation of the carriage. When the valve 21 is set as shown in Fig. 1 and the valve 8 is opened, both ends 19, 20 of the jack 16 are connected to the chamber 7 of the accumulator, but the liquid admitted by pipe 22 acts on a larger area of the piston and so operates the piston-rod 18. On reversing the valve 21 through 90 degrees, the pipe 12 is cut off and liquid from the end 20 can return via pipe 24 to the tank 2, and liquid from the accumulator 4 passes into the end 19 and returns the piston 17 to the position shown. The piston 5 is acted upon by a spring or compressed air. In a modification, Fig. 2, the carriage 35 is retracted when the pipe 29 is connected to pipe 12 by a small clockwise rotation of the valve 23 and in this position the pipe 28 is connected to the pipe 24 leading back to the tank 2. In the position shown, the pipe 28 is connected to the pipe 13.and the carriage is not retracted. In further modifications, one accumulator may serve a number of actuating-devices for operating carriages of aircraft or other objects, or the accumulator 4 may be associated with an auxiliary accumulator which controls the valve 8. As shown in Fig. 5, the accumulator 4 is divided into two parts separated by a partition 47 in which is a stop valve 48, and the pipe 13 leads from the upper compartment. The valve stem of valve 8 passes through a packing 49. Such a construction prevents chattering.
