Abstract

534,054. Hydraulic transmission of power. VICKERS, Inc. Dec. 20, 1939, No. 32631. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1938. [Class 69 (ii)] A hydraulic power transmission system for operating devices such as wing flaps, retractable landing gear &c. on aircraft of the kind in which the parts to be moved are connected to a fluid motor 36, Fig. 1, which is supplied with pressure fluid by a pump 10 and an accumulator 30 is arranged in the circuit as a reserve in case of failure of the motor for driving the pump 10, is constructed with valve control means for cutting off the supply of oil to the accumulator 30 when it is full, the oil returning via a pipe 40 to the tank 14. The valve connections are shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2 and the oil from the pump normally passes via a passage 18, check valve 46, port 22 to pipe 24 to the accumulator 30 or to the pressure side of a four-way valve 26 which connects to the motor 36. A pipe 42 leads from the valve 26 to the pipe 40 and the tank 14. When the pressure rises in pipe 24 to a certain value a. control valve 52 is moved to the left against the action of a spring 60 to connect the passage 18 and a port 44 to a port 38 leading to the tank thus byepassing the output of the pump to the tank 14. The valve 52 is moved under control of a four-way pilot valve 74 the spool 88 of which is itself controlled by a pressureresponsive valve 100 fitted with a piston 116 in a chamber connected by a restrictor 120 and a passage 118 to the port 22. The piston 116 is thus subject to the same pressure as the accumulator 30, and when the piston is raised against the action of a spring 125 in a housing, the valve opens up communication to the right hand end of the pilot valve 74 which is thus moved to the left and opens up communication from the pump inlet 44 to the passage 38 leading to pipe 40 and tank 14.
