Abstract

Powders of dyestuffs which are wholly or partly water-soluble, but are not hygroscopic salts, are provided with a protective coating by mixing them with not more than 10 per cent of their weight of an oily or waxy substance which is (1) an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing from 8 to 18 carbon atoms, (2) an aliphatic alcohol containing from 8 to 18 carbon atoms, (3) an oxidised mineral oil, (4) a triglyceride of an acid as in (1), (5) a liquid mixture obtained by boiling a linseed oil, (6) wool-fat or an alcohol or acid derived therefrom, or (7) mixtures of any of the compounds (1) to (6) with mineral oil, petroleum jelly or paraffin wax, the mixing being effected at a temperature at which the oily or waxy substance is completely liquefied. The products may be compressed into pellets or tablets. Specified water-soluble dyestuffs are Rhodamine B and Auramine O. Water-insoluble azo pigments, such as are used for colouring fats and waxes, may also be present. In examples: (1) Auramine 0 (100 parts) is stirred into a mixture of oleic acid (1 part) and paraffin wax (4 parts) at 60 DEG C. and the mixture, on cooling, is compressed into pellets; (2) Rhodamine B (100 parts) is stirred into a mixture of oxidised spindle oil (1 part) and paraffin wax (6 parts) at 60 DEG C. and the mixture, on cooling, is compressed into pellets.
