Abstract

Base metals and their corrodible alloys are protected by applying to the surface a solution containing less than 2 per cent by weight of a 4-n-alkyl-catechol having 16-18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group in an inert organic solvent. Specified catechols are p 4-hexadecyl-and 4-octadecyl catechols and mixtures thereof. Preferred proportions are from 0.001 to 1 per cent of the catechol. Specified solvents are benzene, gas oil, spindle oil, paraffin oil, mineral lubricating oil, pressure oils, transformer oils, turbine oils or petroleum jelly. Emulsifying agents such as water soluble metal or ammonium salts of fatty acids, resin acids or naphthenic acids or glycol ethers of higher fatty alcohols dispersing agents such as fatty alcohol sulphates or water-soluble salts of sulphonic acids, and passivators such as a water-soluble nitrite may also be present.
