Abstract
576,062. Steering road vehicles fuel containers. AVELING-BARFORD, Ltd., and PENN, O. S. Nov. 26, 1943, No. 19780. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (v)] In a steering arrangement for motor road vehicles having one or more steerable road wheels between which and the vehicle body a gear-driven turntable 11 is interposed, a gear element 14 and a weight-supporting roller 15 are mounted on the steering spindle 7 to cooperate with the turntable and are constructed so that the point of contact between the mutually opposed supporting faces of the roller and turntable is located on a circle concentric and co-radial with the pitch circle of the teeth of the gear element. As shown, the arrangement is applied to the single steerable rear wheel 10 of a three-wheel vehicle. The driver's seat 1 is mounted on a fuel tank 2 bolted to a sub-frame 3 on the chassis 4 and the steering column 6 is rigidly supported by brackets 8, 9. An arcuate toothed rack 12 is secured by spacing blocks 13 to the turntable. 11 and is engaged by the pinion 14, while the flanged roller 15 engages a peripheral flange on the turntable. At two points equidistant from the spindle 7, further flanged supporting rollers 18 are provided, each bearing on the flanged periphery of the turntable and each carried by a vertical spindle rotatably mounted in a guide bracket 20 bolted to the sub-frame 3. An L-shaped bracket 23 also bolted to the sub-frame prevents undue separation of the turntable and vehicle body. The pinion 14 and roller 15 are preferably integral and the axis of the steering spindle may be normal or parallel to the turntable.
