Abstract
576,041. Raft &c. releasing gear. NEWTON, E. P. (Holt, H. W., and Sieverts, W. C.). Jan. 20, 1944, No. 1150. [Class 115] Hydraulically - operated means for automatically unlocking lashing-down cables 6, 7, 10 of a raft or other buoyant life-saving device upon submergence, comprises a main coupling member 19 with bifurcated ends 22, 23 to receive the end portions of a complementary coupling member 24, a hook 29 on the member 24 engaging a pin 28 on the member 19. The end 23 carries a cylinder 32 with apertures 35, 43 and containing a bellows 40 with a locking bolt 42. The bellows contains air at atmospheric or higher pressure, or a volatile fluid, the vapour of which produces a pressure sufficient to retain the bolt 42 in the locked position shown in Fig. 4. Upon submergence to a sufficient depth, water enters the cylinder 32, the bellows 40 is collapsed to withdraw the bolt 42, the member 19 swings into the position shown in Fig. 3, and thereafter hook 29 disengages pin 28 to free the cables 6, 7, 10 and allow the raft to float to the surface.
