Abstract

575,887. Gas-blast circuit-breakers. FERGUSON, PAILIN, Ltd., GRUNEWALD, F., and DAKIN, E. M. April 22, 1944, No. 7521. [Class 38 (v)] A gas-blast high-voltage circuit-breaker has nozzle contacts 4, 5 disposed in an arcing chamber 2 formed by insulating member 3. The nozzles 4, 5 which, in this embodiment, are respectively movable and fixed, are each of the convergent-divergent type. The convergent parts 32, 35 have a length l not less than, and preferably more than, the throat diameter d, and an inlet diameter D, the maximum separation of the nozzles being equal to a=D/2+ up to 15 per cent. for vena contracta. The flow areas across the nozzle entrances are so much larger than the throat areas, that the pressure in the entrances is at least 40 per cent. higher than at the throat, while the gas speed is at least 25 per cent. of that at the throat. Contact 4 has a flange 8 which is moved in cylinder 9, against spring 11, when the gas blast is supplied from cylinder 19. An isolating switch 23, pivotally connected at 24 to the main switch and in series therewith, is opened by a rotatable shaft 28, connected to the pressure responsive mechanism 29 when the arc is quenched. Contacts 4, 5 with raised non- oxidising surfaces 38, 39 have electrostatic stress distributors 40, 41 respectively. The gasblast moves the contact 4, when the pressure in chamber 2 reaches 30 per cent. of its maximum value, thereby stretching the arc which settles on the divergent parts 34, 37 of the nozzles, or on auxiliary electrodes 47, 48 if provided. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the flange 40 on contact 4 is replaced by a surrounding fixed electrode shaped to form a gas scoop at its end. In addition, condenser layers are embedded in the member 3 which has a protecting metal cylinder on its inner surface. In Fig. 4 (not shown), both nozzles are movable in stationary surrounding metal cylinders, each of which carries a short insulating extension in its end. A resistance may be connected across one of the interrupting gaps in any of the above embodiments.
