Abstract

A resinous composition suitable for making adhesives and coating compositions and for impregnating sheet material (see Group VIII), comprises a polyvinyl acetal resin and a resinous ester of a polyhydric alcohol with a saturated aliphatic polybasic acid containing from 4 to 10 carbon atoms. The polyvinyl acetal resin may be a formal, acetal or butyral and may be obtained by partial hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate and simultaneous or complete condensation with aldehyde. Specified polyhydric alcohols are glycerol, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, and acids are adipic, sebacic, glutaric and citric acids. Preferred resinous esters are glyceryl adipate, diethylene glycol adipate and diethylene glycol sebacate. The compositions may be modified by addition of other synthetic resins, cellulose derivatives or plasticisers, e.g. glyceryl diacetate, glyceryl diacetate monolactate or trichloroethyl phosphate; and by addition of pigments, fillers and dyes. The composition may be applied with or without solvents, specified solvents are cyclohexanol, methyl cyclohexanone, trichlorethylene, benzene, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol and mixtures thereof. In examples: (1) cotton sheeting is coated with a mixture of polyvinyl formal, glyceryl adipate and glyceryl diacetate or glyceryl diacetate monolactate; (2) an adhesive solution comprises polyvinyl formal, glyceryl adipate, methanol, methyl acetate and benzene; (3) a composition for extrusion comprises polyvinyl formal, diethylene glycol sebacate and trichloroethyl phosphate; (4) a lacquer comprises the composition (3) dissolved in trichlorethylene, methyl acetate and methyl alcohol; and (5) fabric is coated with a mixture of polyvinyl butyral resin, glyceryl sebacate and glyceryl diacetate monolactate. Material impregnated with the composition may be used for containers and tubular conduits for liquid fuel and for insulating electric conductors.
