Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises an organic diisocyanate modified polyester or polyesteramide, a formaldehyde-liberating substance, an acid or a substance which liberates an acid by interaction with the formaldehyde-liberating substance at room temperatures, and a sufficiency of a volatile organic solvent to render the composition mobile. The materials or articles to be adhesively united or agglutinated are coated or mixed with the adhesive composition, and the solvent is allowed to evaporate and the composition to harden at room temperatures. Specified materials and articles are cork dust, leather dust, wood dust, asbestos, wool or cotton fibres, cellulose acetate, paper and articles such as balloon casings or petrol containers consisting of or containing organic diisocyanate modified polyesters or polyesteramides. Specified formaldehyde - liberating substances are paraformaldehyde, trioxane, dimethylolurea, trimethylolmelamine, hexamethylolmelamine, dimethylolurea dimethylether, dimethylolurea dibutyl ether, and N : N1-dimethyloluron dimethyl ether. Specified acids and acid-liberating substances are oxalic, maleic, adipic, tartaric, citric, hydrochloric and hydrobromic acids, and ammonium chloride, ammonium oxalate and aniline hydrochloride. Specified volatile solvents are ethanol, mixtures of ethanol with benzene or acetone, mixtures of benzene with acetone, ethyl carbonate and methyl ethyl ketone. Specified optional ingredients of the adhesive compositions are fillers, such as carbon black, clay, blanc fixe, whiting, lithopone and mica, natural or synthetic rubbers, plasticisers, such as tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate, and N-alkyl-toluenesulphonamides, and stabilizers, such as hydroquinone, N : N1-hexamethylene-bis-ortho-hydroxybenzamide, N-phenyl-a -naphthylamine, N-phenyl-b - naphthylamine, and a : a - bis - (2 - hydroxy-3 : 5-dimethylphenyl) butane. Preferably, two compositions are prepared, one containing the solvent, the polymeric material and the formaldehyde-liberating substance, and the other containing the solvent, the polymeric material and the acid or acid-liberating substance. Two such compositions may be mixed together immediately before use, or applied separately to surfaces to be united. Examples are given. Specifications 553,733, 572,738, 580,524, 580,525, [Group VIII], and 580,526 are referred to.
