Multiple superposed coatings. - Waterproof fabrics comprise a fabric base having thereon a layer of rubber compound and also a layer containing a cellulose derivative and a synthetic resin compatible therewith. The rubber layer may be applied in the form of a solution or paste containing a vulcanizing agent and preferably an accelerator and may be cured prior to the application of the cellulose derivative. The cellulose derivative may be an ester such as cellulose acetate, formate, propionate or butyrate or an ether such as ethyl, methyl or benzyl cellulose. Examples of suitable synthetic resins are phenolformaldehyde or diphenylol propane-formaldehyde resins prepared in the presence of acid catalysts, toluene sulphonamide-formaldehyde resins, benzene sulphonamide-formaldehyde resin and the resin prepared by condensing lactic acid under reflux as described in Specification 311,657, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]. The solution of cellulose derivative and synthetic resin is made in a volatile solvent and may also contain higher boiling point solvents such as tetrachlorethane, as well as plasticizers, pigments, lakes, dyes or fillers. The fabric may be used for making raincoats or bathing suit bags.
